Head of Nonclinical Safety

As Head of Nonclinical Safety, Monicah Otieno, Ph.D., DABT, leads a team responsible for evaluating the safety of candidate drugs from discovery through early and late development. She brings 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries as a toxicologist and leader working across a range of therapeutic areas and modalities. Prior to joining Gates MRI, Monicah served as Global Head of Investigative Toxicology and Safety Therapeutic Area Lead for Metabolism at Johnson & Johnson, where she led teams focused on resolving safety issues and advancing assets through regulatory development. Monicah began her career as a toxicologist at AstraZeneca where she contributed to building the emerging field of discovery toxicology and expanded her experience into general and regulatory toxicology at Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Monicah earned her Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Rochester followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Toxicology from the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at Johns Hopkins University.
